Chrysalids: Connections to popular culture in the 1950s

As you know, pop culture has changed through out the decades. The changes inspire new ideas in fiction. For instance, the spiderman origin story of a radio active spider states that in that time, people were afraid and interested in radioactivity and its effects on living creatures. Although it happened before the Chrysalids, people were still interested in radioactivity and what would happen if there was nuclear armageddon. Having 6 fingers or telepathy may not be a very probable mutation of genes caused by radioactivity, but the idea is still there. As said by Evey Hammond, an idea can never be killed. I believe that if the chrysalids had been written today, it would have had to do with more modern themes such as virus mutations or global warming. This goes to show that culture is not a static development. It is, and always will be, changing. In this sense, Buddhist beliefs put it the most simply; No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.
